Alan originally trained in Fine Art at Southampton College of Art. Although he subsequently followed a career in a totally unrelated field, he is now able to devote a major part of his time to painting.
Alan enjoys exploring a variety of subject matter in a range of different media. The process of observation, interpretation and creation are as important to him as the finished work. He is often happy to leave work “unfinished”, without feeling the need for it to be “presentable” in the traditional sense.
Although his subject matter is varied, his main interest is in portraiture and the human figure. "I never cease to be fascinated by the way in which even the simplest images of sitters or models can take on a presence of their own, occupying the picture space in their own right. I am still waiting to create my own portrait of Dorian Gray however!"
