The
originator of the idea of a Sketching Club was H R Steer RI, whose painting
entitled "Christmas Eve, Highcross Market" can be seen in Leicester Museum.
The first meeting of the club was held on April 19th, 1898 in the Mayor's
Parlour, when the rules were drawn up. Mr Steer was elected the first
secretary. There were 24 members at that time and they were expected to
contribute sketches regularly on two themes which were set each month.
The Leicester Sketch Club's aims continue to be the appreciation of visual
art generally, and the improvement of members' own work by means of
lectures, demonstrations, criticisms, outings and exhibitions. The Sketch
Club meets on the first Wednesday of each month.
Three excellent booklets have been written recording the history of the
club:1898-1929 by W F Watson; 1930-1983 by Joan Roobottom and 1982-2007 by
Roger Whiteway.
