Laura Dawes
Talk: Working as a Video Game Artist Wednesday 5 April 2017 Vijay Patel Building, De Montfort University, Mill Lane Leicester LE2 7PT Venue link Completed _____________________________________________________________ We had a great turn out and response to our talk - Laura Dawes - Working As A Video Game Artist. Laura gave attendees an insight into the computer games industry, her approach to creativity and an overview of games as an art form. She showed us the work and skill that goes in to creating these amazing 3D images - from early planning from the concept department, gathering reference materials, building and texturing forms and rendering low resolutions imagery. She talked about the importance of being able to draw to communicate ideas, to work quickly to deadlines, to continually learn and work hard, and essentially work as part of a team. She said it what is important is what is in your portfolio rather than relying on qualifications. She has worked in several small studios which has allowed her to do multiple tasks which has made her more employable. Laura highlighted one game in particular that she worked on as an Environmental artist : ‘Oddworld: New ‘n’ Tasty , which is a critically acclaimed re-creation of the 1997 game, and which illustrates her talents and experience with a wonderful use of colour, textures, compositions and overall design showing where fine art and design merge wonderfully. We are sure she inspired many budding Game Artists in the audience with her enthusiasm and dedication to her work. Laura has recently gone freelance after working for many years for Just Add Water and Rebellion - we wish her every success in the future!
