This month, we were treated to an excellent talk by Claire Moore, manager of the Fletcher Gate Art Gallery in Nottingham. Claire was an absolute star, stepping in at short notice after the Tarpey Gallery, regrettably, were unable to give their talk as planned.
Claire talked passionately and knowledgeably about several works by artists that the gallery represents, including many paintings by Nael Hanna. We heard about the start of the gallery by collector George Akins, beginning it with work from his own collection and supporting the gallery financially in its early stages - they now buy and sell internationally. The gallery shows work by contemporary artists and also work bought in from auctions, such as Bonhams and Sotherbys and the occasional amazing find in smaller auction houses. Claire gave us a real insight into the running of the gallery, the role of the internet in their business and how they work with their artists. She showed us a website that tracks auctioned paintings and tracks the prices they have sold for over time, or failed to sell (subscription only sadly, a longer browse through would be fascinating). This enables them to give realistic valuations on 19C 20C and 21C etc work bought in. Claire also gave advice on how to approach galleries (avoiding cold calling with a portfolio) and stressed the importance to present ‘fresh’ or current recent work representing your best work. She talked about the relationship needed between a gallery and an artist and the journey involved for success. A gallery well worth a visit if you haven't been.
