No booking needed, just turn up with your sketching things - non-members welcome. No charge but some places have an entrance fee or parking charge.

Sun 11th May The Newarke and the Castle Conservation Area - Castle View, Leicester, LE1 5WH. Historic area of Leicester - including Newarke Houses museum and gardens, St Mary de Castro church, and the Magazine Gateway. Meet at 10.30am in front of Leicester Castle Great Hall. We will start with a short tour of the location by Steven Peachey, Museum Curator at De Montfort University. This lovely historical area of Leicester offers opportunities for sketching indoors and outside the Castle Great Hall, the Trinity Hospital Chapel and herb garden, views from the Castle Motte, St Mary de Castro churchyard, and the Newarke Houses Museum and garden. The area is a unique tranquil spot with interesting buildings, cobbled streets with a ruinous medieval gatehouse called Turret Gateway. Bring a packed lunch – or visit The Castle Pub or Hand & Bowl Deli for refreshments. 10.30am at Kings Lock Tearoom (LE2 8LT) Map: Kings Lock Tearoom Nearest car park: Bottom of Marsden Lane LE2 8LR Alternative car park: Canal Street LE2 8LZ Nature reserve, river, Grand Union canal with Kings Lock, and Kings Lock Tearoom. Things to draw include Victorian railway bridge (now a walk), ancient packhorse bridge, Victorian canal bridge, willows, flood meadows, old ridge and furrow clear on field near cafe, lock, lock keepers cottage, pylons, stream joins canal, passing canal boats, horses in field etc. |
