- Winners! - Art Club of the Year 2016
We are absolutely thrilled that LSC has been voted the Art Club of the Year 2016 by The Artist and Leisure Painter Magazines sponsored by Jackson's Art. Plus - we also won the People's Choice Award, voted for by visitors to Patchings in Nottinghamshire. The five paintings selected by the Committee and submitted into the competition were exhibited during the festival at Patchings between 9th - 12th June. It was a difficult to choose just five paintings from the selection of members work – all of which would have represented the club very well. The competition also took into account the club's history, the events, exhibitions and workshops that are put on for it's members and the wider community.
On the final day of the exhibition, artist and regular contributor to The Artist magazine, Hazel Soan, selected the overall winners as Leicester Sketch Club, and the two runners-up as Gateshead and Guildford Art Societies. Of Leicester Sketch Club, Hazel said
"Leicester Sketch Club wins first prize because the five paintings entered work together perfectly as a team. They show a wide variety of media, bring a broad range of styles and each represent different subject matter. Each emphasises a different aspect of painting: Boats at Blakeney, the power of line and perspective; Red Alert, colour and harmony; the figure, Exit, tone and form; Poppies and Scuttle, shape and texture; and the portrait of Anna, character and expression.
The inclusion of each painting, excellent in itself, enhances the others and makes the whole group stronger. The artists in the art group obviously enjoy observation, drawing and challenge, and they demonstrate a spirit of adventure - none of the pieces is too literal.
The paintings are all very different but get on well with each other, convincing me the artists in the group do the same. There is a liveliness that runs through the selection, flowing between the paintings, creating a visual conversation that is very inviting. This Group has perfectly understood the ethos of the competition. I want to meet the members of this club, they obviously have excellent tuition and raise each other up. I would join this club! Congratulations." Read an interview with Hazel here
