A great fun evening yesterday led by the fantastic Maxine Dodd. Maxine draws her inspiration from moving images of sportsmen, dancers and other challenging subjects. After demonstrating her process, members attempted Maxine’s techniques, sketching quickly from moving images. Great fun and a real challenge.

Sounds in The Sea: The Art and Science of Ocean Acoustics

There is a recording of this talk, available from the members' page

We are visual creatures. But underwater, visibility falls off dramatically and the kinds of visual observations that biologists use to study terrestrial ecosystems are not practical. Studying what is happening under the ocean requires a different approach. Ocean Acoustics uses sound to listen in to what’s happening and collect data that illuminates life in the ocean. This project makes visible the invisible world of sound in the sea. I created densely embroidered silk panels that help describe what researchers are discovering. The artwork illustrates the largest daily migration of zooplankton, the sound enhancing SOFAR channel, phytoplankton and the dramatic vocalizations of marine life gathered by hydrophones.  I drew inspiration from the work of the Swiss embroidery artist Lissy Funk. In this talk I will also describe the challenges and rewards of a scientific voyage off the eastern seaboard of the United States.

Our member Vivien Blackburn says:

"Shortly before Covid started, I acquired 2 furry lodgers in my home and art studio. I started doing cartoons and sketches of their antics, starting with the way they followed me room to room. Loving and mischievous there was always something to draw, from cuddles to mountaineering and flower arranging. Smokey, half Norwegian Forest Cat and half Ragdoll, intelligent, agile, loving and full of mischief is the instigator of trouble. Simi, an alley cat, not so bright or agile (though very loving) watches. This pattern was set from their arrival'

Wednesday July 6th - Summer social and sketching evening

A good social evening - sketching in the grounds, a look at everyone's sketchbooks, and some nibbles!

We also looked at the work of one of our past members, Joyce Hulford, who joined the sketch club in 1993. Joyce recently passed away and her niece Ali brought her work for us to view - wonderfully joyful and colourful, and we got a real sense of her personality through her work.

Leslie Goodwin MBE HON RTD RWA ROI

We are sad to announce that we have been advised that Leslie Goodwin passed away on 21st April 2022, at home.

He was born in 1929, and studied painting, drawing and design at Leicester College of Art from 1949-55.

He began work as a commercial artist, while at the same time developing his personal work in oils and watercolour, and pastels.

He exhibited regularly at the Royal Academy and his work is in private collections throughout the world including the Royal Collection of his Royal Highness, Charles, Prince of Wales and in public collections throughout the country.  He also exhibited at the Royal West of England Academy, the Royal Institute of Painters in Oils and the Royal Institute of Painters in Watercolours, most recently in 2015 and 2016.

Teaching and lecturing on art became an important part of his career, first in adult education in Leicester and later at Leicester University until he retired in 1994. He also combined lecturing and exhibiting in the USA with coast to coast tours.

He also broadcast frequently for the BBC and had many articles published on painting techniques.

Leslie was awarded an MBE in the Millennium New Years Honours List in 2000.

Ken Howard RA Professor of Drawing at the Royal Academy has this to say of his work “One of the marks of a true artist is that he has a recognisable language which opens peoples eyes to a way of seeing the world. With his rich use of paint, his wonderful colour sense and undeniable drawing skills Leslie has created a language which reveals and celebrates the life around us”.

Sue Baker Kenton
‘Portraiture, Process and the Construction of Identity’

Sue Baker Kenton is a visual artist for whom drawing is pivotal. Her work repeatedly circles two themes; the passage of time and the exploration of corporeal permeability. Her images, which often reference classical portraiture, are vehicles that raise questions about our contemporary life. Her practise engages with the analogue nature and material resistance of traditional print processes, etching being a medium she has worked with for some 30 years.
Alongside her ongoing studio practice Sue works on collaborative projects, commissions, undertakes residencies and continues to teach in FE; she was appointed etching fellow at RA Schools, Royal Academy of Arts, (2016 - 2019), and has been a specialist tutor UAL Foundation in Art & Design at City Lit since 2014.
Her recent Forward Broadcast exhibition at Leicester Print Workshop marked the beginning of a year-long research project funded by Arts Council England.
She exhibits nationally and internationally and her work is held in public and private collections including the Victoria & Albert Museum, London.

Wednesday March 2nd, 7pm - Artist talk by Loz Atkinson - Finding the Fallen

Loz Atkinson  ‘Finding the Fallen’

We had a fascinating and very poignant talk by Leicester artist Loz Atkinson.  In July 2019, accompanied by Italian Aeronautical Archeologist Francesco Sabini and Photographer Zoe Childerley, she climbed Monte Zatta in Northern Italy to explore the crash site of her Great Grandfather’s Halifax MkII JP237 Bomber, where he and the entire crew perished on 24th June 1944.

For more details visit the LSA website:
http://www.leicestersocietyofartists.co.uk/lsa-blog/2020-08/loz-atkinson-finding-the-fallen.php

There is also an exhibition of more of Loz's work at the Attenborough centre, till March 27th:

'Expressive Life Drawing'

We experimented with various drawing techniques and ways to take the drawings on to another level, pushing the boundaries of each participating artist's drawing methods. The goal is to be as expressive as possible rather than a mere accurate depiction  of a life model.

Wednesday February 2nd, 7pm - Artist talk by Robert Dutton - Mixed Media Landscape demonstration

‘Spring landscape hedgerows and fields'
In this exciting zoom demonstration with Robert you will learn how mixed media can be combined in loose, energetic and exciting ways to create a colourful and atmospheric landscape view of fresh Spring greens. Watch Robert as he demonstrates and explains each and every important stage of the painting from initial inky washes to final energetic soft pastel strokes.

Wednesday January 5th, 7pm - Artist talk by Tina Mammoser:  https://www.tina-m.com/

A fascinating talk by Tina about her Deep Time project, and a demonstration of how she creates her abstracted landscape paintings, using layered acrylic washes to create exquisite veils of colour on canvas.

A recent degree (she has 8!) was geology, the most recent was space science and so work on Mars links with the geology.

In drawings she uses line beautifully to express the complicated geology of the Yorkshire coast and elsewhere.

https://www.tina-m.com/deep-time

Here are some screen shots from her demonstration:

Picture
The base layer - washes of Indian or Chinese ink, and Staedtler Mars pencil lines
Picture
The first layer of washes using acrylic paint diluted with water - (this is transparent red iron oxide by Golden)
Picture
Adding more colours - magenta and purple - to give a vibrant base layer
Picture
Drying off the base layer with a hairdryer
Picture
Tina's palette for her mid layers uses ultramarine, burnt umber, and titanium white (but she uses zinc white on larger paintings as it's more transparent)
Picture
She uses a dryer brush at this stage and scrubs to pull out the edges of her colours - she aims to remove all trace of brush marks!
Picture
Tina says she always uses natural bristle brushes rather than synthetic

Adding another glaze of transparent purple over the top - for larger paintings she might add up to 20 layers of glazes

JOHN NIXON

November 2021 - We are saddened to announce that John Nixon, a long standing member, has died at the age of 89 years (one month before his 90th birthday). When he retired as an architect 30 years ago John took up painting. He was skilled at drawing buildings, but wanted to move on and experimented with new media and styles, including life drawing, landscapes, sculpture and pottery. He also attended classes at the Attenborough Centre.  At home he set up Still Life compositions three times a week. He found animals difficult, but his entry in our 2022 exhibition was a painting of his daughter’s horse, an indication of his keenness to step outside his comfort zone. He ran the Newtown Linford Art Group, which happily will continue. He was also asked to judge at the Birstall Art Group.

He was interested in everyone and their work, and he came to Jo Sheppard’s critique at the October meeting, bringing a painting of his grandchildren. We are so fortunate to have had such a member.

His funeral is on Wednesday December 15th at 1.15pm at Loughborough Crematorium, and afterwards at The Linford at Newtown Linford, to celebrate his life.

Wednesday Sept 8th, 7pm - talk by Wayne Attwood at Leicester High School, London Road LE2 2PP

For our first meeting back at the High School we had a fabulous talk by Wayne Attwood about his work as Artist in Residence during the demolition and reconstruction of Birmingham New Street Station.  A look at his sketchbooks and how he developed his finished paintings in the studio, and lots of stories about working on a huge and very busy construction site!  Here are some photos from the evening....

More about Wayne from his website............

https://www.wayneattwood.com/paintings

Wayne seeks to explore the emotional responses to human relationships, including the emotions that can be evoked by memory of relationships. He views these paintings as ‘ghosts of the memory of feeling’. It is the often vagueness of memory or emotion why he eschews a literal or ‘realist’ approach, but leave space for a vague or unresolved interpretation to express such motifs.

He uses various sources for each painting, ranging from old film photography to direct observation to maintain the element of spontaneity and better capture a memory or an  intimate response, as opposed to a face value depiction.

The paintings are 'searched-out' by the progressive (sometimes destructive) application of numerous interacting layers and marks, constantly moving the active paint layer around. Improvisation is fundamental to the process.

Thursday 17th June   Outdoor sketching at Kirby Hall, Corby, Northamptonshire

June 2nd, via zoom, at 7pm.         Tony O'Dwyer - members' talk - 'An artist and his work from the 1960's to the present.’

Watch Tony's talk here

“I am a figure painter who takes frequent excursions into landscape. My figure paintings are usually of the nude and I also a paint portraits, when I can find a sitter. I have a passion for urban sketching and am currently developing that. I paint in an improvised, on the spot way, taking the image from realism to abstraction - and back again sometimes. I go out sketching at least once a week to locations in the Midlands and I keep a small sketch book for daily studies.

I retired from being a librarian with Leicestershire Libraries and was a mature student at De Montfort University (BA Fine Art). I kept a small studio in Ireland for several years and my work has found its way into several galleries there, and was included in an exhibition of Irish artists at Denver University in 2006.”

Rob Wareing - Portrait demonstration - May 2021

Update 25/8/21 - sadly Rob's wife has informed us that Rob passed away last week - "Rob was really looking forward to starting live workshops again and inviting you all to his new studio but sadly this was not to be."

This month's event is a portrait demo by Roy Wareing. It was originally going to be live but Rob is recovering from surgery so we have a video instead.
