JOHN NIXON
November 2021 - We are saddened to announce that John Nixon, a long standing member, has died at the age of 89 years (one month before his 90th birthday). When he retired as an architect 30 years ago John took up painting. He was skilled at drawing buildings, but wanted to move on and experimented with new media and styles, including life drawing, landscapes, sculpture and pottery. He also attended classes at the Attenborough Centre. At home he set up Still Life compositions three times a week. He found animals difficult, but his entry in our 2022 exhibition was a painting of his daughter’s horse, an indication of his keenness to step outside his comfort zone. He ran the Newtown Linford Art Group, which happily will continue. He was also asked to judge at the Birstall Art Group. He was interested in everyone and their work, and he came to Jo Sheppard’s critique at the October meeting, bringing a painting of his grandchildren. We are so fortunate to have had such a member. His funeral is on Wednesday December 15th at 1.15pm at Loughborough Crematorium, and afterwards at The Linford at Newtown Linford, to celebrate his life. |
Mike Haswell
Honorary member of LSC, Mike Haswell, died on Tuesday 14th July in Burton Hospital. Fellow Sketch Club member Di Lorriman has told us that he was so very happy seeing his older friends at club nights. He was a kind man from the old school of values and he loved his painting days. Leicester born and bred, Mike was loyal and did a great deal of work within the club over many, many years. He joined the Sketch Club in 1965 where at that time meetings were held in a basement room at the New Walk Museum. He became President in 1973 and a year later took on the post of Treasurer that he held until 2011. Mike’s interest in art began at the Leicester Colleges of Art and Technology where he completed a three-year course in shoe design. This involved classes in the history of costume, life drawing and sculpture. On completion he continued evening classes in life drawing and had the good fortune to meet Eric Dennis, Bryan Ward and Ann Walker who had all recently joined the Leicester Sketch Club.
Mike was a kind, unselfish man and a gent, and he will be missed.
