Rita Sadler
"I live in Loughborough. It is a place that is very important to me. I have learnt that I can always find inspiration for my art from my immediate surroundings, my home, garden or the back lane where I walk our dog every day. I am happiest working from life. I love painting outdoors and my natural instinct is to put down what I want to say as quickly as possible to catch the atmosphere and mood. It focuses my attention on the important elements in order not to be distracted by the details. Quick thumbnail sketches in a sketch book help to decide a suitable composition. My sketch book also provides valuable source material for future paintings. I am privileged to be an elected member of the LSA. I originally learnt to paint in watercolours. More recently I have experimented using a wide range of mediums which means I start each new project with an open mind. If a painting doesn’t work out, I leave it then perhaps go over it later with a different medium or technique as it no longer feels precious. I have ‘cut and pasted’ paintings and used them in collages to great effect. The paintings I’ve done most recently are always my favourites. I have recently completed a couple of textile paintings working on painted calico using a free arm sewing machine following sketches I did on location. Whatever next?"
