Our meeting for March included an excellent, inspirational talk by painter and print-maker Ross Loveday, described by many attending as being 'refreshing'. He was extremely generous in sharing his non-traditional techniques, methods, materials as well as the thoughts and narrative behind his work. Ross talked about his printmaking methods, showing us a large aluminium plate, with drypoint and carborundum, used in a very free and painterly way, giving beautiful results. He then showed us the resulting print, helping us to understand the process. Almost better - he doesn't clean his plates after use! (Usually a necessary chore of printmaking). He also talked about his paintings and the limited colour range he uses in both prints and paintings. A sense of place being crucial, with elements simplified, pared down to the essentials, and full of exciting marks. For some time he made the journey from Bury St Edmunds' to Leicester to use the resources at the Leicester Print Workshop. His dedication is clear as printmaking is a physically demanding discipline without adding on the lengthy travelling time. Recently sculpture has been added to his body of work, some pieces sparked by distressing scenes of refugees fleeing war torn regions through sandstorms, with nothing but what they can carry. The loss, grief, and hopelessness coming through powerfully in his figures but without mawkish sentimentality. Finally he showed us a new body of work in development and asked for our thoughts which sparked a lively and very interesting discussion. A few of the audience have resolved to join/rejoin the print workshop to do more printmaking of their own as a result of the talk. He also talked briefly about his career and journey into the art industry from being an optician for many years and his recent success with a solo show with Eames Fine Art in London. The LSC aims to have speakers who inform and inspire and Ross certainly fulfilled this brief, with the audience coming out buzzing with thoughts and ideas – we would like to thank him very much for doing this talk for us. ______________________ Thanks to all those involved in organising the talk especially to the good people in the LCB Depot for allowing us to use this wonderful space for free - in particular Paul Guyan and Sue Worwood.
