Artist talk by Tina Mammoser "Tina Mammoser was born in 1970 in Chicago. She grew up equally fascinated by math, art, science, writing, and music. An endless academic, she moved to Scotland in 1993 to pursue a second degree. Later she moved to London, where she finally took up art and painting, and then to Yorkshire. She earned her British citizenship in 2012. Years living next to Lake Michigan, the River Tay, the Thames River, and the North Sea surfaces in her abstractions of water and the sea. In 2005 she began cycling and painting the English coastline, which prompted a return to university in 2010 for her sixth degree. She studied the coastal geology that is now a vital element of her artwork. For over 20 years, Mammoser has been combining elements of abstraction with the science of her materials and subject matter. Her drawings and paintings are collected internationally. She now works from her studio in Scarborough, North Yorkshire. In 2021 she began her eighth degree, looking to add elements of classical studies to her artistic knowledge." For more information about Tina visit her website: https://www.tina-m.com/ |

Diane hall is a creative with g8 artists. Currently a Fine Art Tutor at the Attenborough Arts Centre, where she has worked for the past 20 years.
At The University of Lincoln, in 2013 she completed her MA in Fine Art, with distinction and has since in 2014-15 had a Residency at the University and at the University of Loughborough in 2018 -19. Diane is a Trustee in City of Leicester Museum Trust, which uses public donations to buy works of art and artefacts for the City Museums. She co-wrote and implemented a Residency, for contemporary artists at New Walk Museum Leicester. Hall’s work is concerned with the imperatives of conservation, global ecological issues and the associated political debate concerning our planet. For 10 years she worked with the National Forest including working on an old open-cast mining site. There it became apparent to her that the wealth and employment that industry had brought to Leicestershire came at a price. It is the enigmatic qualities of the equilibrium, between the industrial and natural landscape, that is a source of fascination for her. At this decisive time, she continues to be inspired by environmental issues and the political implications involved. Often working in series, with different media including charcoal, collage, print, paints and textile, where upcycled fabrics are used. Thus, the themes of waste in society punctuates Hall’s work. |
Wednesday May 4th, 7pm - Leicester High School for Girls, 454 London Rd, Leicester LE2 2PP Sue Baker Kenton ‘Portraiture, Process and the Construction of Identity’ Sue Baker Kenton is a visual artist for whom drawing is pivotal. Her work repeatedly circles two themes; the passage of time and the exploration of corporeal permeability. Her images, which often reference classical portraiture, are vehicles that raise questions about our contemporary life. Her practise engages with the analogue nature and material resistance of traditional print processes, etching being a medium she has worked with for some 30 years. Alongside her ongoing studio practice Sue works on collaborative projects, commissions, undertakes residencies and continues to teach in FE; she was appointed etching fellow at RA Schools, Royal Academy of Arts, (2016 - 2019), and has been a specialist tutor UAL Foundation in Art & Design at City Lit since 2014. Her recent Forward Broadcast exhibition at Leicester Print Workshop marked the beginning of a year-long research project funded by Arts Council England. She exhibits nationally and internationally and her work is held in public and private collections including the Victoria & Albert Museum, London. She is not interested in painting people that everybody knows, or people who are already famous. Instead, her work explores individuals from different cultural backgrounds, personalities and genders through symbolism and narrative, following a poetic journey in which she searches for beauty. Her work is typified by bold bright colours and patterned fabric. Her paintings demonstrate a contrast between realism and expressionism, from thick textured paint to smooth delicate painting, allowing the viewer to feel the presence of the sitter.
