Saturday 11th February 1-4pm
Knighton Parish Hall, Church Lane, Leicester LE2 3WG
Associate members - Developing Art Practice
Tutors: Vivien Blackburn and Toni Northcott
A workshop for Associate Members which will focus on ideas for developing practice in art work. The aim is to help and provide support for Associates in preparing for application for full membership of the club.
The workshop will cover ideas for developing and building a body of work, including collecting resources for ideas and the importance of using sketchbooks to achieve this, and the process of giving and receiving feedback on work both formally and informally.
Participants will have examples of sketchbooks and finished work to study, and will be able to discuss the processes used to develop work, and to share their own methods and processes. They will be given opportunities to comment on and discuss work, and to suggest ways of moving forward, using both their own and others’ work.
There will be no charge for this workshop, and we hope Associates may be able to suggest further ways in which we could support them in their work.

Saturday June 10th, 10am – 3 30pm Art room at Leicester High School for Girls 454 London Rd, Leicester LE2 2PP Jane Hutber - Gelli plate printing workshop - 'Exploring acrylic techniques on the gelli plate' 10 places £60 including an 8x10" gel plate and a 2" brayer £35 without the plate and brayer, but please bring your own. (Plate should be a commercial one, 8 x 10” or larger. Brayers can be 2 or 4” and hard rubber or soft, and need to be of reasonable quality, but don’t need to be professional printing standard.) Please download the full materials list here Exploring acrylic techniques on the gelli plate Gelli printing is a form of mono printing done without a press. The plate is either made from gelatin/glycerin or agar agar, or a commercial mineral based soft printing plate. The resulting one-off prints can be richly layered and/or textured and can be colourful or as subtle as you choose. The soft surface of the plate allows for detailed textures and designs. Many media can be used on the plate, but in this workshop we will be looking at the possibilities and potential of acrylic paint on a mineral based commercial plate - using layers, stencils and masking, with the addition of some other fine art materials as resist. It is a fascinating and experimental process. This workshop will be a playful exploration of acrylic gelli plate techniques producing a variety of prints that either stand alone or can be developed further in mixed media projects. |
Jane Hutber originally trained as a classical musician at Manchester University and the Royal Northern College of Music. She worked as an early music performer and as an accompanist, then gradually got more interested in the music of other cultures, primarily West and South Africa, teaching and performing. One day in 2008 she decided to do a course in drawing portraits because she was afraid of doing it - and hasn’t really left the art room since! She brings the same eclectic and curious approach to her artwork as she did to her music - and loves gelli printing, both on its own and combined with other artistic mediums and techniques.

The same lively and alternative approaches will be applied to your drawing practices to create some less obvious alternatives. Aims:
